Introduction to Roleplaying Games and Cooperative Storytelling

Roleplaying games (RPGs), such as Dungeons & Dragons are collaborative storytelling games that involve a game master (GM) and a group of player characters (PCs). The GM acts as the story narrator, who sets the stage, challenges, and acts in place of the story's non-player characters (NPCs) The PCs are tasked with the GMs challenges to act together to overcome these challenges.

Where the real fun of RPGs lays is in the creativity that occurs in the collaborative storytelling. While the GM is principally responsible for building the world and the scenarios the PCs will face, the PCs are the key actors with agency within the narrative. The art of playing is in the interactions between the PCs and how they respond to challenges. PCs can also have personal goals and motivations, driving them toward different behaviours and choices that might conflict with one another or even with the GMs story. Such conflicts add points of drama and can be the source of character growth.

The only limits on RPGs is are imagination and game rules, which exist mostly to frame possibilities and provide guidance. How closely rules are observed is subjective to the enjoyment of the players. Typically, only the GM needs to know the rules well and how and when they can be broken to serve a greater narrative and entertainment value.
